The Microsoft/FIT Youth2Work Initiative
Youth2Work is a Microsoft/FIT youth employment information, advice and access to training programme designed to help get young people in Ireland working.
Developed in partnership between Microsoft and FIT, it combines industry insight and commitment with years of hands on experience of delivering training programmes designed to deliver in demand IT skills.
Microsoft is investing €3m in the Youth2Work programme in the form of software donations, curriculum support, financial aid as well as volunteer mentors and supporters from within the employee base. The initiative aims to engage over 10,000 young people in Ireland over the next 3 years - equipping them with the right skills, on the job training and the right social and practical supports for interviewing with success which will position them well to achieve their ambition of getting a job.
This is the first time that youth unemployed have been the focus of a dedicated training and development initiative with a range of new courses - all with Microsoft accreditation - developed for young people. The courses are in the areas of mobile technology, cloud computing and gaming. Microsoft supported FIT in the development of the course content and curriculum and each of the exams taken at the end of the courses are industry recognised with graduates receiving valuable Micorosft accrediation. Many of the courses also include work placement and internships which will be invaluable to graduates as they pursue careers in their respective areas.
Youth2Work complements existing government initiatives such as Momentum in which FIT is a prime partner delivering over a quarter of the ICT Programmes nationally in campus style locations in centres in Dublin and Cork. FIT also works in close partnership with FAS, ETBs (Formerly VEC), Schools and Youthreach to support job seekers.
FIT is constantly innovating in the field of 'ICT as an enabler' of young people and with the support of Microsoft can now leverage this effort to benefit many more young people over the coming three years.
